Government pledges more support for young people with SEND
The government has pledged further support for young people with SEND with changes to the short breaks offer, supported internship opportunities, and increased focus on those with Down syndrome.
- The short breaks innovation programme is to be extended to a further seven local authorities. The programme provides a range of activities for young people with SEND with the intention to improve their health, education and wellbeing outcomes.
- The supported internship programme was designed for those aged 16-24 years that have an Education, Health and Care plan (EHCP). Twelve local authorities are taking part in a pilot extending this offer to those without an EHCP but that require additional support to gain employment.
- Following the bill in parliament relating to the needs of those with Down syndrome to be considered uniquely, the government will be collecting new data about the numbers of young people with Down syndrome as part of the school census.
