Disappointing news for teacher recruitment
The Department for Education released the latest figures on recruitment to initial teacher training (ITT) and on the whole figures are down on last year. Only the primary subject ITT comes close to meeting its target, achieving 96%. Secondary subjects achieved only 50% of their target and EBacc subjects achieved only 55%, both lower than 2022/23 figures. Overall, there are 26,955 new entrants to ITT, down 5% on last year. The targets were set based on analysis from the Teacher Workforce Model (TWM) utilising data from the school workforce census producing the number of new teachers required to provide a sufficient supply. Given that almost 40,000 teachers (9% of the workforce) left and a further 4,000 retired. It would seem that unless these figures increase there is going to be further shortages across the education sector causing major impact on the education of young people.
