Disability History Month

Disability History Month is now in it’s 12th year and runs from 18th November 2021. It began with a launch event on the 18th November with a number of key advocates in the joint themes for this year which are ‘Disability and Hidden Impairment’ and ‘Disability Sex and Relationships’.
The month was begun with the aim to:

  • Celebrate our Lives as Disabled People now and in the past
  • Challenge Disabilism by exploring our oppression over time and now
  • Achieve Equality

A number of key organisations have produced resources around disability history to support the month.

  • The House of Lords have produced a number of materials detailing how they have supported removing barriers and raising awareness and a downloadable book of six influential people who have impacted disability related UK laws.
  • The NHS have used the opportunity to promote the Workforce Disability Equality Standard to ensure their workplaces are open and inclusive.
  • The TUC is running a series of webinars around disability.
  • Together!2012 are hosting various arts and performances on their website to tie into the themes.
