Preparation for Adulthood (PfA) Professional Development Group

This professional development group will bring together school leaders and SENCos/Inclusion Leads to focus on preparing children and young people for adulthood from the earliest years. A combination of group sessions alongside optional personalised coaching sessions, is designed to enable school leaders to plan strategically for school improvement in relation to Preparation for Adulthood (PfA). The approach will be underpinned by use of the Implementation Cycle (Education Endowment Foundation) in order to demonstrate impact and create sustainable change.

All Tuesdays 3:30 - 4:30pm

- 15th October
- 12th November
- 10th December
- 14th January 2025
This programme will run from September 2024 to the end of January 2025, at which point participants will be expected to complete a short case study. Participants will benefit from a collaborative programme designed to share expertise and across the sector, and establish a clear strategy for ensuring that change is manageable and sustainable.
Whilst the PfA outcomes/themes sound as if they apply to older children and young people, the Code of Practice (2015) makes it clear that preparation for adulthood should start in the earliest years. The foundations for success in moving into adulthood need to be laid early, through a planned and deliberate approach to i) what is taught and learnt and ii) how it is taught and learnt. At each stage of their learning and development, children and young people need to be prepared for the new responsibilities, experiences, opportunities and risks associated with the next stage; from a child learning to make choices about food and friends, to a young person making choices about education, training or employment.
The programme will provide an opportunity to plan for sustainable change across one or more of the four key areas.
